Lichen IslandA small atlas of slow change

The slow beginning.

On bare volcanic stone, a living skin starts making a place for everything that comes next.

Not quite a plant.
Never alone.

A lichen is a partnership: a fungus builds the structure while a photosynthetic partner supplies energy. Together, they can inhabit places neither would manage quite the same way alone.

in the fissures.

Small crusts begin in protected cracks. A surface that appears empty from standing height is already a neighborhood through a hand lens.

Real succession is uneven. Moisture, exposure, local species and disturbance all matter; these five stages are a visual model of colonization, not a way to date a rock.
