Beyond
the sea.

Natural ultramarine. A blue held inside stone, patiently separated into the color of distance.

Lapis lazuli: blue lazurite, pale calcite and golden flecks of pyrite.

A mineral,
then a material.

Lapis lazuli is a rock made from several minerals. Lazurite carries its remarkable blue; calcite brings pale areas, and pyrite adds the familiar glints of gold.

Grinding the stone is only the beginning. Natural ultramarine is refined from the blue fraction, separating much of the colorless material.

Blue is not the whole rock.The pale veins remind us how much work separates a beautiful stone from a concentrated pigment.

Fine powder

Small particles make a soft, velvety field. The apparent blue changes with particle size, binder and the light falling across it.

Broken surface

A fracture catches light in sharp planes. White minerals and golden specks make the stone’s color a landscape.

Ultramarinus

The name points “beyond the sea,” recalling the long journeys that carried this costly blue into European painters’ workshops.

Separate

Historical extraction methods used kneading and repeated washing to draw out increasingly pale blue fractions.

A visual material study. These generated swatches evoke natural ultramarine; a screen cannot reproduce the physical behavior of pigment. Synthetic ultramarine is a different manufacturing story.
