A chair is a small agreement between wood, weight and the person who sits down. The most important part is usually the part you cannot see.

Held, not hidden.

The front leg meets the seat rail with a mortise-and-tenon joint. A shaped tongue of wood fits into a matching pocket, giving the meeting more surface and more strength than a simple butt joint.

The grain
sets the direction.

Long fibers follow the legs. The seat brings a broader, calmer surface. The curved back catches light at its upper edge and offers the hand a place to rest. Each piece has a job; none needs to pretend to be something else.
