Jaipur / stepwell spatial studyStone, shadow,
and a lower horizon

Down
to water.

A stepwell turns the journey to water into architecture. The wall becomes a stair; the stair becomes a pattern; the pattern draws you inward.

A lower horizon
at the center
of the courtyard

Let the sun move.

One staircase disappears into shadow. The shape stays; the reading changes.

Stair as wall

The repeating flights do two jobs: they make a boundary, and they make that boundary traversable. Movement is part of the façade.

Water as center

The smallest rectangle carries the reason for the entire structure. The descent gives the water a spatial gravity.

Shade as room

Deep arches offer a counterpoint to open steps. Light reveals each edge; shadow gathers separate surfaces into one mass.
